The Guru

I was attending a discourse a couple of weeks ago. A lot was said and discussed; this stayed:

The specific conversation was centered around something else but I took from it 'the value of a teacher or the guru'.

The gentleman conducting the session shared this wonderful anecdote about a child, who has just started going to school and upon being asked by her father how much is 2+2 replied that 2+2 = 4. The father, testing the child, says that she is wrong and that 2+2 = 5. The child says no 2+2 = 4. This back and forthing continues for a bit but the child doesn't relent. Father is amused and says you have spent 5 years with us and yet you believe that the teacher, who you have known all of a month, is correct and not me?

If the student did not have complete faith that the teacher, and only the teacher, knows best and will always give the correct answer, what learning could ever happen. Life would be so confusing.
